census on 10 Aug 1850 in Monroe, Dist 4, Green Co., WI.535 With wife Cornelia and 6 children, all his, 4 of them

WI.533 From Pulteney, NY.
With Lovina he had Hiram and Samuel in 1828 and 1831,probably in Pulteney, Steuben
Co., NY, where he shows in the 1830 Census. This is west of the West branch
of Keuka Lake (elevation 715) a 'finger' lake. Near Cohocton, Steuben Co., NY
in 1840 Cenus. Also lived In Yates Co., NY, which borders Steuben on the N and
E.
Came to Green Co., WI as a Episcopal Methodist preacher in 1836 'and preached
in the different settlements, using the cabins or the groves as meeting houses.'
Appears in the 1840 census in Cohocton, Steuben Co., NY, however, but not after
that date. Withdrew from the Lent Hill meeting house, Cohocton, NY, in Jan
1842 at the same time as wife Cornelia (reported as Carmelin), George and Elijah
De Lap. On 31 March 1842 a letter awaited him in the Naples Post Office and
was advertised in the Family Visitor of that date.
On 2 Jul 1849 Samuel and Lucinda Turner of Green Co., WI sold 80 acres to A.C.
Delap for $350 containing the E 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of of Sect 32 T2N R7E:
Early settler and store keeper in the Springville,Jefferson Town, Vernon Co.,
WI, sec 23, T12N R5W on the Springerville branch of the Bad Ax river. In Town
of Monroe, Dist 4, Green Co., WI on 10 Aug 1850 with wife Cornelia and 6 children,
4 of them hers. Lucy was a year old in 1850 in WI. Had the first cooper shop
in Wheatland, Vernon Co., WI. Property valued at $800 in 1850. Lived near his
brother Rev. Robert. His other children were all born in WI in the 1850s.
On 19 Apr 1854 Robert and 'Betsy' sold to his brother A. C. De Lap, 11 rods of
the W side of the SW quarter of the NW 1/4 of Sect 33 T2N R7E containing 5 1/2
acres in Green Co., W for $55. Witnessed by Noah Phelps and C. Morse.
Ambrose preached in Isaac Cone's house in Section 8 of the Town of Sterling,
Vernon Co., WI, 1855.

On 15 Apr 1856 he obtained a patent on 40 acres: NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of sec 19
T12N R4W, in Vernon Co., WI. On 17th Sep 1856 he, with wife Cornelia, deeded
to his son Hiram for $50 N 1/2 of the E1/2 of the SE quarter of the NE quarter
of Section 8 in T12N, R6W of the fourth principal meridian, containing 10 acres
on the S fork of the Bad Ax River in Harmony Town at an elevation of 673.'
John Rowe sold or let go to him 80 acres at a tax sale: the SW 1/4 of the SE
1/4 of sec 15 T12N R6W, for $3.90, Certificate 167, on 12 Sep 1856. This was
about two miles east of the land he sold Hiram. On the 12 Mar 1858 Ambrose
and Cornelia conveyed 34.5 acres of this to William H. Knower, being the NW
1/4 of the SE 1/4 of sect 15, T12N R6W that lay N of and above the main branch
of the South Badax River that ran through the tract. Some right of use of the
water had already been given to Henry W. and Rebecca A McAuley by Benjamin McCormick
and his wife. Also a half acre was reserved for the Wesleyan Methodist Church
as a site for a church building.
He officiated at a double wedding of John Henry DeLap to Margaret Nice and Margaret
J. DeLap to W.R. Hart at his home in Millville, Grant Co., WI. Organized Wesleyan
Methodist Church of Forest Town in 1857 in E Vernon Co., WI.
He obtained patent on 40 acres in NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Section 17, just south
of son HIram's 10 acres on the south fork of the Bad Ax river, and 40 acres in
SW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Section 27 and 40 acres in the SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section
28, T12N, R6W, 46th Meridian on 10 Mar 1857, called Bear Hollow, near Red Mound,
Sterling Town, Vernon Co., WI. This was near his son Hiram's claim of 10 Aug
1858. Obtained a patent on 40 acres in SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 22 of T12N,
R6W on 10 Aug 1858. This land is in what was then called Bad Ax Co., later called
Vernon Co., WI in the Frohock Valley in Sterling Town, Vernon Co., WI. On Wed.,
3 Nov 1858, Ambrose was a dealer in dry goods, groceries, hardware, medicine
and farm equipment.
Lived in Sterling Town, Vernon Co., WI in 1860 with wife Cornelia and 3 children:
John, Ambrose and Lovina, and a servant born in CT: Mary Ames 16. Held first
services in 1860 on sec 28, T13N R7W where Genoa later built. On 13 Mar 1860
he and Cornelia deeded to William R. De Lap (their son) for $100, 1/2 of block
27 containing lots 1, 2, and 3 in the Village of Springville in Bad Ax or Vernon
Co., WI.
Let go at a tax sale some land on 4 Sep 1862 in Vernon Co, for $1.45. This was
deeded to Isaac F. Tharp on 12 Mar 1867. Lived at Point Bluff, Adams Co., WI
in 1872. Reverend Ambrose* Corkin DELAP and Lovina* ANDREWS were married in
Dec 1826 in Naples, Yates Co., NY. At her death, following childbirth. 25. Lovina* ANDREWS515 was born on 3 Dec 1803 in Glastonbury,
Hartford Co., CT.538 She
is listed with Ambrose and 7 children in the 1850 census in Monroe,Green Co.,
WS as 36 years old, born in CT. She is listed with Ambrose and 3 children in
the 1860 census in Sterling, Bad Ax Co., WS, as 46 years old, born in CT. She
died in Oct 1832 in Turkey Hills, CT.539
C.R.Delap stated that this Andrus family was descended from Governor Andrus
of New England and later VA. No evidence yet for this assertion. The surname
is given as Andrews in John and Mary Andrews, 1872. Children were:

He was christened about 1844 in Weston, Oneida Co., NY. 'Converted'
at age 13. In 1860 he was in Carpenter, joiner in Sterling Town, Vernon Co.,
WI. He died on 6 Apr 1907 in South Hancock, Waushara Co., WI.
He was buried in 1907 in Hancock Cemetery, WI.544 Service conducted by Rev. Helms at the Martin Sullivan
home. Eight of ten
children attended the funeral. Albert and Ina unable to come. He was in Ordained
Wesleyan Methodist Minister. Came west at the age of 16, about 1847.
Listed as a farmer in the 1850 censu in Monroe, Green Co., WI, (14 Aug,1850)
with land worth $200.On 20 Feb 1857 he obtained a patent on 40 acres the NE
quarter of the NE quarter in sect 27, T12N, R6W in Vernon Co., WI for cash at
the La Crosse Land Office.
He was Justice of the Peace in Vernon Co., WI, signing a deed from his brother
Hiram to a Jesse Warner on 12 May 1859.
He redeemed the SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of sect 27, T12 R6, (40 acres) at a tax
sale on 4 Jan 1865 for $5.50. It had been deeded to E. B. Burton on 30 Jun 1860..
The taxes were due 1856 (certificate 67) and a sale held 17 Apr 1857. He was
ordained a Wesleyan Methodist minister in 1860. President of the Wesleyan Conference
in 1868. Obtained a patent on 80.81 acres in the W half of NW Quarter of sect
2, T17N R2W in Monroe Co., WI on 1 Mar 1871 at the la Crosse Land Office, WI.
Health failed in 1906. Cared for at the home of Martin Sullivan of South Hancock
in his last days. Had ten children. Six living at his own death. |
