On 13 June 1688 the heirs of John Alden, Sr., of Duxbury, signed a release
in favor of Jonathan Alden stating that they had received their portion of the
estate. Those signing were: Alexander Standish (in ye Right of my wife Sarah
deceased), John Bass (in ye right of my wife Ruth, deceased), Mary Alden, Thomas
Dillano, John Alden, Joseph Alden, David Alden, Priscilla Alden and William
Paybody
A cooper from Harwich, Essexshire, England who came on the Mayflower in 1620.
Part of the Standish family in the beginning.
Bradford said that Alden was hired for a cooper at Southampton where the ship
loaded up supplies. He was blond and tall and strong. Youngest signer of the
Plymouth Compact. lIved in Plymouth until 1627. 'All the land betwen Burial Hill
and Main Street once belonged to John Alden and William Bradford.' In 1626
he with Standish, Brewster and Howland and others agreed to pay the Colony's
debts contracted in England. Removed to Duxbury after 1627, settling on the
land granted to him on the south side of the Blue fish river. Built a house
near Eagle Tre pond near the dyke and had his well there. A second house was
west of the first . The original grant contained over 109 acres (also reported
as 169 acres). His house burned and he and Priscilla took refuge with their
son Jonathan, an assistant Governor for the Plymouth colony 1633-39, 1651-86,
prob 1631-32 and was deputy governor for two years. His marriage to Priscilla
Mullins was the subject of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, "The Courtship
of Myles Standish", which although a classic has little factual basis. John
and Priscilla were among the founders of the town of Duxbury 1632.
In 1634, John Alden was on the Kennebec River assisting in the forceful removal
of John Hocking who was illegally fishing and trading on land that had been granted
to the Pilgrims. Hockings refused to leave, and when the party arrived at his
ship by canoe to board and remove him, he shot and killed Moses Talbot. In return,
Hockings was shot and killed. The Massachusetts Bay Colony took matters into
its own hands, and arrested John Alden (even though he was not the one who fired
the shot). Myles Standish was sent by Governor Bradford to obtain Alden's release,
which he successfully did.
Opposed to religious toleration 1646. Leader of Quaker and Baptist persecutions
1657. Treasurer 1656-58. Granted 10 pounds in 1660 because of his 'low estate.'
In later years, John Alden was on many juries, including even a witch trial--though
in Plymouth's case, the jury found the accuser guilty of libel, and he was fined
and whipped. The alleged witch was allowed to go free.
John and Priscilla Alden may have the largest number of descendants of any Mayflower
passenger, along with Richard Warren and John Howland. They are ancestors to
Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,
and (former) Vice President Dan Quayle.
Bradford said Alden "was hired for a cooper, at South-Hampton, wher the
ship victuled; and being a hopefull young man, was much desired, but left to
his own liking to go or stay when he came here (Plymouth Colony); but he stayed,
and maryed here."
His house in Duxbury may still be visited.

the witches as a set of wenches playing off juggling tricks.. He wrote an account
of his trial where he says that he was jailed for 15 weeks and escaped to Duxbury.
He arrived there in the middle of the night and told his relatives that he was
'flying from the devil, and the devil was after him.' Gave himself up to the
Boston authorities and was bound over tot he Superior Court on the last Tuesday
in Apr 1693. Discharged by Proclamation when no prosecutors appeared.

He was a mariner and became a naval commander of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
He was a member of the Old South Church of Boston and his ancient slate headstone
is embedded in the wall there. On a trip to Salem, he was accused of witchcraft,
spending fifteen weeks in a Boston jail. He escaped shortly before nine of the
other "victims" were executed. He was later exonerated.

Plymouth Co., MA. She was born in 1629 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co.,
MA. She died on 12 Aug 1674. Her marriage to Myles Standish
son, Alexander, puts to rest any idea of a long-standing feud between the Aldens
and the Standish clan. In fact, there is much evidence to suggest that John and
Myles remained lifelong friends or, at the minimum, associates. Sarah and Alexander
lived in
Duxbury until Sarahs death at about 76 years of age. They had seven and
possibly eight children. The Duxbury house where they lived still stands.Research:

ALDEN was born about 1632 in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony. He died
on 14 Feb 1697 in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA. He was buried on 17
Feb 1697. Lived in Duxbury until his death. Was the second owner
of the Alden House which he received from his father upon his death in 1687.
The house then passed to his own son, John. Six children. We gain a little insight
into his life when, at his funeral oration, Jonathan was described as, "...a
sincere Christian, one whose heart was in the house of God even when his body
was barred hence by restraints of many difficulties which confined him at home."
