in prob. New Amsterdam, NY.2318
He signed a will on 3 Apr 1740 in Scrallinburgh, Bergen Co., NJ.2760 "-In the name of God, Amen. I, JACOB FARDON,
of Scrallinburgh, in Bergen County, New Jersey, yeoman, being very ancient, yet
of sound mind, this April 3, 1740. I leave to my eldest son Thomas 10
and no more, and it is my will that he shall pay to my executors the sum of 275
for which he has given his bond to me, dated August 30, 1715. My executors are
to pay my daughter Mary the sum of 6 yearly, after the death of her husband,
Frans Vanderburgh. I leave to my son-in-law, Jacob Bennitt, 100; If he
dies, then to his children. I leave to my daughter Jannettie, wife of Adolphus
Brower, 100. To my daughter Femmittie, wife of Barent Bloom, 100.
To my daughter Dericke, wife of Andries Westervelt, 100. All the rest of
my estate, real and personal, I leave to my 3 sons, William, Jacob, and Johanes,
and make them executors.
Witnesses, Abraham Harring, Hendrick Gisner, David Ogden. Proved, March 17, 1743.
He was probabliy from La Rochelle, the Huguenot stronhold in France who escaped
to Holland and then to New Amsterdam. The surname of Farden was sometimes used.
One of the arliest Dutch coloniest on Manhattan Island. Probably arrived about
1627 with his wife and daughter Magdalena. Jacob* VERDON and Maria* Thomasdr

about 1604 in Loyden, Holland. She died about 1696 in Gowanus, Brooklyn,
NY.2762 Death also given
as Long Island, NY. in 1716 but does not jibe with 1608 birth. Summoned to the
council of the West India Co. of New Netherland on 18 Nov 1634 'on accountof
some naemes which she had called' Wouter van Twiller, the director, 'because
he wassupposed to have spoken dishounorably to her. Before the council she declared
that Wouter van Twiller said or did nothing of the sort.' She was then called
Marritgen Thomas, widow of Jacob Janss, from Rochel.
Deeded 1/2 of land Paulus van der Beeck sold to Wm. Huyken on 6 Aug 1679 which
formerly belonged to William Bredebent, located at Gowanus bounded by Cornelius
Lambertse Cooll and Thomas Verdon, on 28 Feb 1693/1694 to Anna Huyken, widow
of William Huyken. Witnessed by Hendrik Claessen Vechte and Jacob van Doren.
Presented on 18 Jan 1695/1696 by Peter Delanov, before Brandt Schuyler, Justice,
NY. Received in Brooklyn on 27 Jan 1695/1696 by Henry Filkin, Registrar. She
signed by a mark. She had inherited this farm in the 1670s as the only child
of Aeltje Braconye, who had married William Bredenbent. This shows that Mary
was about 90 years old at this time. Children were:

property to fire set by Indians in Pavonia in Sep 1655. Applied for position
of Beer Hauler in NY 8 Apr 1656. Traffic violation with beer hauling wagon in
1659. Magistrate of Brooklyn from 1661-1664. In 1664, he complained about an
English ship from which 20 people came to shore in Gowanus and took away his
bowder, lead and a gun and tobacco and a pig and a waistcoat and wounded his
wife in the leg when she attempted to stop them,while he was out with Tomas Fansen.
The also took goods out his chest and strewed them all over the floor. Valuation
of his Brooklyn property on 26 Sep 1683 included 2 horses at 24 pounds, 3 cows
15 pounds, 1 do 2-3years old 2/1 pound, 4 do 1 year old 6 pounds, 1 poll 18 pounds
and 8 morgs of land (about 17 acres) 16 pounds. He was a Constable of Brooklyn
from 1684-1687. He took an Oath of Allegiance in 1687. |
