The will of Adam Brouwer Berchoven of Bruckland He left his wife Magdalena
his entire estate. Sons Pieter and Jacob, and daughter Aeltje were "cut
off with a shilling for disobedience, but their children are to inherit their
parents' share." He named his other children: Mathys, William, Adam, Abraham,
Nicholaes, Mary, Fytie, Helena, Anna, Sarah, and Rachel. He left 3 pieces of
eight to Adolphus, the son of William; and 1 piece of eight each to Magdalena,
daughter of Matthys; Magdalena, daughter of Pieter; Vrouwtje, daughter of
Fytie; and Magdalena, daughter of Mary. Executors were Barent van Tilburg and
William Nazareth. Witnesses were Henry Sleght, Cornelis Siebring, and John Fredericks.
He died on 21 Mar 1692 in Albany, Albany Co., NY.1837,2314 Last
name also has the form of Berckhoven. He was a native of Cologne, Germany.
Adam was Christened at Cologne on the Rhine, Germany. Whether that was his birthplace
is unknown. He had an ancestor: Arent Brower, who lived from 1520 to 1575 and
was born in Amsterdam, Holland.His name "Brouwer" denoted the original
family occupation in Germany, that of brewing. Sailed to Brazil on the 'Swol'
in 1641. Settled in New Amsterdam in 1642. Sued the West India company in 1642
and 3. 1650 bought a mill at Gowanus (flour) in Brooklyn, NY, 1656 bought a house
on Manhatten Is. NY. Battle of Long Island during revolution centered there.
Taxed 6 flourins for land held in Gowanus, Brooklyn, 1657, one of 7 families
living there. Adam, with partner Isaac de Forest, built a flour mill known as
the "Gowanus Mill", the oldest in the town of Breukelen (Brooklyn).
This property remained in the Brouwer family until 1798, when it was sold by
Adam's son. The mill pond was formed by damming off the head of the stream known
as "Gowanus Kill". It was around this mill that much of the Battle
of Long Island centered during the Revolution in 1776. The dwelling house remained
standing until it burned in 1852.
Arrested for making seditious speeches in 1667 and 8. Censured by the church.
Sired Daniel Adams Brouwer by Aeltje Van der Beek in 1678. Banned from the
Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church for a time. In the valuation of 26 Sep 1683 he
had 1 poll 18 pounds, 1 mill 100 pounds, 3 cows 15 pounds 1 do of 2 years 2.1
pounds 2 does worth 5 pounds 3 sheeep worth 3 pounds and 3 mors of land (about
7 acres) worth 6 pounds.
Adam bought out his partners in the mill eventually and he and his sons later
established a second mill in the same neighborhood. Although Adam was a respectable
citizen in many ways, Adam* Brouwer BERCHOVEN and Magdalena* Jacobs VERDON were
married on 21 Mar 1645 in New Amsterdam.2319,2320 Dutch Church Dutch Reformed
