because the birth records in Oregon were burned at an earlier date. The registration
states that his father was born in Woburn, MA but this is was a belief at the
time of RET. His father's birth was in Woodstock, NB and a certificate to the
effect exists. He appeared in the census on 16 Apr 1910 in Mount Scott Precinct,

between 1943 and 1945 in Okinawa, Japan.18,19 Solomon Islands, Okinawa. Chief
Petty Officer: Machinist's Mate. Construction Battalion of the US Navy attached
to Marines. Function: Mosquito control. Enlistment: 5 Aug 1943 - 5 Nov 1945
He died on 16 Oct 1980 in Salem, Marion Co., OR.20 Died 3 days after a heart attack in bed. He had suffered
from angina for several years and was treated for it with nitroglycerin.
Memorial service held 23 Oct 1980 at Rigdon-Ransom Colonial Chapel, Cottage and
Chemeketa NE, Salem, Marion Co., OR. Gerald T. McCray officiated. Several people
spoke, reminiscing on his life and character, including Joseph Sands and Leonard
Kimbrell. Kernan Turner read from his father's journals. Joseph Sands assisted.
He was buried on 24 Oct 1983 in Castle Rock, Lake Co, OR. Not buried,
but ashes placed in a niche at one of his favorite boyhood places in Yocom Valley:
Castle Rock. He had Social Security Number 543 07 3631. 17 Jun
1937. Original in possession of RJT. Saw his first automobile in 1908. First
went to school at Oak Creek, Douglas Co., OR. Shown as living at age 5 in 1910
with his (divorced) mother, two uncles and his widowed grandmother Priscilla
age 52 in the Mt. Scott district, Douglas Co., OR.
Lived in Vale, OR as a child for a short time when there was an outbreak of typhoid
fever. He was stalked while walking in sagebrush as a child by a lynx. Taught
by Pauline Blanton Ross (her age 18) in Barren Valley, Malheur Co., OR along
with the House, Dowell, McHargue and Madariga boys at the Cord School District
#34.
Moved to Yocum Valley, Lake Co., OR, in 1916 at age 11, in the fifth grade.
His grandmother Priscilla Cordelia (Thornton) Kernan lived with his family and
influenced him greatly. She had walked to Oregon on the wagon trail. He skiied
in Yocum in the winter 1916-17. He began smoking in 1917, at age 12. His teacher
that year was Anita Kester of Poe Valley. He made ice cream with other boys
from roped wild cows milk mixed with ice from lava crevices in the high altitude
valley. An Elson Grammar School Reader, Book 3: printed in 1910 with Elson's
signature exists also with RET's signature: "Ralph E. Turner, Lake View
Oregon, April 23, 1918, 7th Grade, Lake County, Seventh Reader." He was
14. There are seven cartoon drawings of men on the inside front cover and drawings
of a "1/2 horse" and a teacher, heads, and pistols in the back of the
book.
His family moved to Klamath Falls, Klamath Co., OR, by covered wagon in 1919,
at age 15. He attended the First Baptist Church in Klamath Falls. He was appointed
cartoonist for the high school yearbook as a Freshman. The editor was Ruth Marie
DeLap, later his wife. Graduated from Klamath County High School in 1925, age
20.
When he married Ruth they had a new Ford Model A roadster.
Worked as a timber faller, millworker, truck driver, mechanic, teacher, coach,
elementary school principal, school superintendent, store owner.
Mining gold in the Gold Hill area of Jackson Co., OR in the summer of 1933 with
his wife.
Member: National Honorary Fraternity for Men: Theta Delta Phi, 24 Jun 1936.
Enrolled in Oregon Normal School at Ashland in 1934 at age 29, attending two
year program.
Address on 16 Jul 1935 was 3412Eberline St., Klamath Falls, OR when he was administrator
of his mother's estate.
Taught school in Canyonville, Douglas Co., OR, after graduation from Southern
Oregon Normal School.
Next taught at Pelican school in Klamath Co., OR.
In the summer of 1941 he took his family in a Willys Knight sedan to Reading
MA to visit his father who he had not seen since 1907 when Harry left his mother,
and Ralph was not yet three years old. Ruth had discovered the location of his
father through the Spanish American War records. Harry had lived in the same
vicinity of Woburn and Reading since his return from OR in 1907.

He joined the National Guard in Klamath Falls about the beginning of WWII: Chie
fpetty office motor machinist's mate (T), V-6. r in the 145th Construction Battalion
of the Seabees (Naval Construction Battalion) in the Second World War. Enlisted
5 Aug 1943. Carved several official145th Battalion plaques 12" diameter,
one dated March 1944. Though he was a Chief Petty officer, machinist mate, he
was assigned to malarial control in the Solomon Islands and Okinawa, attached
to the Marines. He was also later trained in camoflage while in the Pacific,
but never used it because the war drew to an end. Member VFW V644829, 1 June
1944. Honorable discharge on 5 Nov 1945.
On return from WWII he lived in the Antioch Baptist Church parsonage at SW 32nd
Place and Lincoln St., Portland, Multnomah Co., OR, where his family was already
established, from Nov 1945 to Jun 1946, while he taught school in West Linn,
OR. Purchased a 1938 Buick Century that year. It had many mechanical problems.
Moved family to Vancouver, WA for the summer of 1946 while he attended school
at Vanport, OR.
Moved the family for two weeks to Lake Cr., Camp, Umpqua Nat. For., Douglas Co.,
OR, in Aug, 1946 for two weeks. This was the site of his honeymoon with Ruth
in 1926,
Moved in temporarily with his cousin and step-uncle: Roy Agee while a house was
being finished on Alameda St., Roseburg. There he rented for a few months a
house while the one he had bought at 222 Alameda was being built. Besides his
wife and two sons he hosted his mother in law M. O. De Lap and his step father,
Ray Agee, brother of County Clerk Roy Agee. Ray was ailing.
Principal Fullerton Grade School, Roseburg, Douglas Co., OR, Sep1946. Purchased
the house at 222 Alameda, and Lot 11, Everadine Homesites, Douglas Co., OR, 24
Oct 1946 from L. E. and Everadine Fender. L.E. was the builder. Recorded 3 Mar
1947, Roy Agee Co. Clerk and Katheryn Petrequin, deputy. Roy Agee had once owned
this property and sold it to Fender.
Completed a Bachelor degree on 16 Jun 1947 by part time and summer education
at the University of Oregon.
Life member # 2714 of Roseburg, OR Elks Lodge # 326, joining on 13 Apr 1948.
Inherited $500 from his grand uncle: Tom Kernan, of Iowa, who died that year.
He purchased a 1947 red Dodge sedan that year for about $1800. He attended
the University of Oregon 1948 summer session taking painting, drawing and Survey
of Visual Arts.

Took a leave of absence for a year to get a Masters degree at the Univ. of OR.
He purchased a new 1951 cream colored Dodge sedan. Later he was Secretary of
the Teachers Union in Roseburg 1952-53. Disgusted with school politics, including
the firing of the President of the union, his friend: Warren Ewing, he quit teaching
in Feb, 1953.
Owned and operated with his wife, Melrose General Store, Douglas Co., OR Feb
1953-1956, and Turner's Market in Winston, Douglas Co., OR 1956-58. He raised
boxer dogs for a couple of years in Melrose and eventually kept one: 'Hans' for
several years. Bought Lot 3, Valley View Plat., Douglas Co., OR, 16 Sep 1955,
from C. E. and Margaret B. Reece. On 30 Sep 1955 sold property in sec 21, T
28 S, R 6 W,, Douglas Co., OR about 235' x 355.5 ' in size to Arlyss M.and Bernadine
M. Dunham. Recorded 1 Mar 1957. He purchased a new 1957 Dodge sedan.
Superintendant of Schools in Hoonah, Alaska 1958-1960. Purchased a red Dodge
3/4 ton pickup in the summer of 1959 while staying with his son and family Ralph
J. Turner in Cedar Mill, Washington Co., OR.
With his wife he sold Lot 3, Valley View Plat, Douglas Co., OR on 31 oct 1960
to Charles J. and Ann M. Crunican from their location in the Marshall Islands,
where it was notarized by J. B. Mackenzie. Recorded 7 Nov 1960 in Douglas Co.,
Charles Doerner, County Clerk, Marguerite Munson, Deputy. Sold the Dodge pickup
in the summer of 1960 and left his dog Hans, a boxer, with his son Ralph J. in
Eugene, Lane Co., OR.
Educational specialist for the Interior Department in the Marshall Islands 1960-62
(Trust Terr. of the U.S.). This was an Interior Dept. position for 1960-62..
Illustrated textbooks for the Marshalese educational system in 1961. Left Majuro,
Marshall Is. on 19 Sep 1962, where he and his wife had lived for two years.

Named administrator of his father's estate in 1962 in his father's will. Visited
his father in Reading MA in Jun 1963. Settled his father's estate after his
death in MA in 1965. This included selling his father's house in Reading MA.
He drove a Khaman Ghia automobile at this time.
He was Superintendant of the schools at Hoonah, Alaska, a state school in an
Tlingit island village. During that time a new school was constructed there.
Next he was High School principal at Metlakatla High School, Anette Island, Alaska
15 Oct 1962-1966, another Indian village. He took an examination for the US
Dept of Justice: Immigration and Naturalization Service on 28 Jun 1967 and obtained
a score of 80 on lesson 3.1.

His contract for the year 68-69 was for $11900. This was an Alaskan State school.
Most of his students were Athabascan indians but the school was integrated.
He and Ruth first rented a log cabin in Tok, and then later bought the Presbyterian
log church and parsonage which had been abandoned. He made several changes to
the buildings. The temperature reached as low as minus 75 degrees at this site.
He also owned and helped operate a small sawmill that logged black spruce trees
for log cabins with George Pine in Tok AK in the early 1970s for a few years
before moving to the border. His teaching contract for the 1970-71 year was
$17535.
Informed by the Alaska Dept of Highways Diestrict 2, Fairbanks, on 18 Nov 1970
that he had an encroachment on the Glenn Highway and that it was : "Sign
located at Mile Post 124.3, said sign being 'Lumber'." This was a very small
sign carved that year by his son and hung well back from the highway from a post.
He removed it.
He sold the Presbyterian site. On leaving Alaska intending to retire, in the
winter of 1972 his trailer house caught fire when the temperature was minus 50
degrees and burned to the ground. He saved the Ford LTD car which was touring
it. He had his grandaughter Rosalind Ruth Turner with him, returning her to
her parents in Tucson.
He and Ruth returned to work one year as Immigration Officer at the border station
close to the Yukon border for one year 1972-73, where he and Ruth had lived
in government facilities. He had Alaska Driver's License: 176140.
Retired for a second time to 1051 62nd Court NE, Salem, Marion Co., OR in Jun
1973. His son Ralph J. had moved to Sheridan, Yamhill Co., OR that year.
Received patent #2917 to Lot 3, Block B-4 of the South Edition, Townsite sbudivision
Section 19, T18N, R13E, Copper River Meridian of 1.025 adcres, Tok, Alaska, recorded
on 15 Nov 1976, instrument 76-21395. It appears that he paid $1075 for the lot
back of Tok Lodge.
He received a change of assessed value on a lot in Klamath County, OR 4116-4
from $200 to $500.on 15 Apr 1974.
He received a change of assessed valuation on his property in the Fruitland Addition

her parents, and her two sisters to Ashland from Klamath Falls, OR to see her
neice Nondis, born 7 May that year. They took the only road along the Klamath
river which took 2 days. They stayed at Pinehurst on the way, with her mother
and sister Wilmoth staying in the the House and her father and sister Octavia
staying in the barn, in the hay. They could hear the horses eating all night
and her father told them that the horses had false teeth, which she knew wasn't
true. Attended Klamath Falls High school and was the editor of the Annual. Graduated
in 1921.
Attended the University of Oregon for three years before marrying. Worked in
Klamath Falls in the County Clerk's office and for a lawyer. Living in Vancouver
WA on 24 Jun 1934 when her parents had their 50th anniversary celebration on
Jun 1934 where her husband was working in a wrecking yard making trailers for
depression transients. Living in Ashland, Jackson Co., OR at the time of the
birth of her eldest child on 24 Oct 1935, while her husband was in College there.

per year while her husband was in the Navy. Address on 1 Sep 1943: 2227 NE 50th

Station, Yamhill Co., OR to live with son Ralph J and daughter in law Phyllis
I. Turner in 1984. Moved to Hoonah AK with her husband in 1957 where she worked
in the school office. Visited her son Ralph J. stationed at Strawberry Butte
L.O., in Lake Co in Aug 1960. Accompanied her husband to Majuro, Marshall Is
in Sep 1960 until Aug 1962 Accompanied her husband to Metlakatla AK in Oct
1962.
Received a letter from her brother Virgil's company DeLap and DeLap concerning
transfer of stock from the estate of her mother. She received 8 AT&T stock
and 17 Illinois Power stock. At that time 7 of her 8 siblings were alive, all
born before the turn of the century except for herself. There was no mention
of her brother Loyd's share or of his heirs. There was no mention of her disabled
sister Wilmouth, though an estate was set aside for her. The value of the stock
at the death of her mother (1959) was$80.50 for AT&T and $19.62 for IL Power.
$977.54 was then her inheritance from her parents plus value accrued in the
intervening 3 years. Considering her parents great age and large family and
that most of the estate had to be set aside for Wilmouth this indicates that
it had some value even though it was passive since the death of her father in
1945.
Moved with her husband to Tok, AK in 1966 where she fell down a trap door and
broke her ankle. Retired to Salem, Marion Co., OR in Jun 1973. Helped finance
an underground masonry house with an apartment of five rooms for herself with
a kitchen and fireplace in 1982-85.. Urinary tract cancer and neck tumor in this
period did not incompacitate her. She cooked a lunch for herself and son nearly
every week day from 1984. She had breakfast by herself and dinner with Ralph
and Phyllis and any company that visited. Received many visitors at Rock Creek.
Had a 90th birthday party in Oct 1993 to which over 100 guests came. Drivers
license: Oregon 69211, class 4, to expire 11 Oct 1997.
