2380. James* SKIFFE^{1993,1994,1995} was born about 1610 in Kent, England. Other spellings: Skeffe, Skyffe, Skaffe. He died on 27 Feb 1687 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA. English business man in the time of the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. Came to America after he lost his family to the plague around 1635. Arrived in Plymouth, MA, moved to Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA 1637 from Lynn, MA. The Skiffe House in Sandwich MA on 6A east of the center of town was built in 1638. "It was ordered that the little neck of land that lies by William Newland's house shall be appropriated as a burial place for the town, and that 3pounds 7s. 4d. be paid from the town's money, now in the hands of James Skiffe, without any more trouble." Apparently Mr Skiffe was the town treasurer. On 2 Apr 1667 he with Richard Bourne, and William Bassett were appointed on the Council of War. In CCL of LH+G he is mentioned, page 1632: "The Towne beeing met together upon the second day of September 1673 did appoynt and empower Richard Bowrne and James Skffe to lay out what lands theay shall think necessary..." James Skeff Sen is chosen Selectman. There is also mentioned on that page Stephen Skffe. He my be another son of James, not otherwise known in this record. Appears in census of 1643 in Sandwich, p 257. On 2 Apr 1667, Richard Bourne, Wm Bassettt and James Skiffe, Sr, were appointed to a Council of War. James* SKIFFE and Margaret* REAVES were married in 1630 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA.¹⁹⁹⁶

	iii.	Nathaniel SKIFFE1993,2002 was born on 20 Mar 1645 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA. He died on 24 Apr 1723 in Windham, CT. Parriot has death as 31 Dec 1741 in Windhame, CT. McCausland has a Nathan Skiffe born 16 May 1658 in Sandwich, died 19 Feb 1725 in CT as the son of James Skiffe and Margaret Reeves, rather than Mary. The houses on the south road can in part be identified as the residences of James Allen, Nathaniel Skiff, Benjamin Skiff, Nathan Skiff, Rev. Rodolphus Thatcher, and probably Thomas Mayhew and Nathan Bassett. On May 12, 1685, Matthew Mayhew gave the following description of Nashowakemmuck: "The land called Nasho wakemmuck, bounded easterly by the bounds of line between Takemmy or Tisbury and the said Nashowakemmuck; south erly by the sea; northerly by a line called the Middle Line, beginning at a rock which parteth, or is bound between the north and south partition of that part of the said Island of Martin's Vineyard, and from thence extending westardly, as the line hath been run or set until it meet with a line to be drawn from the harbour on the north side of the Island, called Waweaktick, to the westermost part of the fence, now standing on the south side of the Island, called Wesquobscutt now or late in the tenure or occupation of Nathaniel Skiff; which said line so to be drawn is the western bounds of the said| lands."

She died on 13 Mar 1718 in Sandwich, Barnstable Co., MA. The houses on the south road can in part be identified as the residences of James Allen, Nathaniel Skiff, Benjamin Skiff, Nathan Skiff, Rev.
