OTIS2015,2539,2540,2541 was born in 1581 in Glastonbury, Somerset, England.
Also given as Barnstaple, Devonshire, England by Amos Otis and in the mauscripts
of the corporation of Barnstaple, England. He signed a will on 30 Mar 1657 in
Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA.2021
Dated 30 May 1657. He died the next day . Proved 28 Jul 1657. Gives legacies
to daughter Margaret Burton and her three small children 20 shillings amongst
them, a small brass pot and canvas sheet, to daughter Hannah Gill two feather
bolsters one rug and cotton blanket and his largest brass kettle. To Mary Gile
one cowe and one pillowbear, and Thomas Gile Jr. one muskett, to daughter Ann
and daughter Alice 4 shillings each, to wife 40 shillings, sonJohn to be executor.

he was. Otis indicates that he came from Barnstaple, Devonshire,
England. Arrived with his family from England prob. with Rev. Peter Hobart and
co. on 18 Sep 1634. In Hingham, MA, 1635. Took the 'Freeman's Oath' on 3 Mar
1636. Lived at Otis Hill SW of the harbor. On 18 Sep 1635 he drew a house
lot of 5 acres on Town St. in Hingham where he lived until 15 Mar 1646 when his
house burned with Thomas Loring's next door. 13 Feb 1646 he bought a house &
5 acres nearby which he later conveyed to his son John Otis, Jr. Became a spokesman
for the old-timers from Devonshire, England, in his community.
Elected to the Rates Committee. Grand juror in 1640 , receiving 6 shillings
for this service. Elected one of 9 in charge of the town. Served on the church
seating committee along with Anthony Eames, Nicholas Jacob and Ralph Woodward.
In 1641 he attempted to get his grandchild baptised even though his son-in-law
was not a member of the Church. Hobart, the minister baptised Hannah Otis Burton
anyway, which was an affront or challenge to the Boston church.
Moved to Weymouth after his marriage to Elizabeth Streame of that place. His
widow was assigned 2 lots abt 1663 amounting to 4 acres for lot 41 and 15 acres
