88. William* T. THORNTON444,992,993,994,995 was born on 11 Aug 1766 in Yorktown, York Co., VA.966 Abbie J. Garrison claims that William Thornton was born in SC in 1754. This is not consistent with other data, though not an impossibilty. The SAR has his birth as 1765. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Morgan District, Burke Co., NC.996 He appeared in the census in 1840 in , Clinton Co., MO.997 He died in 1843 in Bayfield, DeKalb Co., MO.966 Died near Bayfield, DeKalb County, MO. The SAR has his death as 1845. He was buried in 1843 in Clarksdale, De Kalb Co. , MO.966 Thornton Cemetery. He served in the military (1776-1783) in , , VA.969 According to Abbie J. Garrison of Baker OR, William was of Irish descent. Suffered at the hands of the Tories who beat him with pine knots and left him for dead. Carried scars from this all his life. Served as private in the 4th Troop of the 1st Regiment Light Dragoons Virginia Troops in the Revolutionary War, command by Colonel Theodorick Bland (Cert. by Adj. of U.S.War Dept., Washington, D.C. Rec. #306033). Tradition in the family is that he was a body guard to Gen. George Washington during the war. He served in the siege of Yorktown. Received Military Warant 2026 6 Dec 1783. Probably the William Thornton listed in Burke Co, Morgan Dist. NC in 1790 with one male over 16 and 3 females. Listed in 1800 census for Burke Co.,NC. Removed from NC to Clark Co., KY in 1804.. Worked at Red River Iron Works in Clark Co, KY. In 1816 moved with Todd and Adam families to Callaway Co., MO and settled near Fulton. Known for his hunting and trapping success there in 1817. In 1830 owned four parcels of land in Callaway Co.,MO. In 1840 the clan living in Callaway County, Missouri moved to adjoining farms in De Kalb Co., MO.

Obtained US Patent 22586 for 38.57 acres on 1 Jul 1845: SW 1/4 of NW 1/4 OF Section 3, T57N R33W. Belonged to a Primitive Baptist group of ministers, teachers, wood workers, brick layers, blacksmiths, nurses and midwives. Their first chruch was called Bethlehem, located on Sec. 35 T58 R33 with Elder Jesse Todd as pastor. Donated land for Thornton Cemetery in 1843 which now contains a cemetery. Salem Church was on his land about 1847. Meeting house made of walnut siding and clapboard shingles from the Thornton saw mill. William* T. THORNTON and Martha*'Patsey' Ann OWEN were married on 5 May 1786 in , Lunenburg Co., VA.998,999 Artie had a date of 31 Oct 1785. James Shlburne officiated. by Rev James Shelburne, Baptist Minister. SQS Enterprises gives a date of
5 May 1786 for the marriage in Lunenburg, VA.

89. Martha*'Patsey' Ann OWEN1000,1001 was born on 18 Oct 1765 in Lunenburg Co., VA.1002 Gives her age as 86 in Oct 1850, living with her son William Thornton. This would make her birth date 1764. She died after Oct 1850 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO.1003 Died betwen 11 Oct 1850 (census) and 14 Aug 1854 (not listed with those receiving husband's estate).- according to De Shazer Craft in 'East Goes West', 1981. Death date given as 1844 by Mrs. Hale Houts in Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in MO, 1966. She was buried after 1850 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO.1004 Thornton Cemetery. Eldest daughter, she had to plow and plant crops during the Revolution while the men were away. Received $20 from her fathers will of 1829. Living at age 86 with her son William II and Sally in 1850 census. Neighbors are her sons Jeptha and family, Bakers, Kerns, Isaac Agee, John Thornton. Children were:

Sarah 'Sallie' THORNTON728,1005 was born in 1789 in Chowan Co., NC. She died between 1850 and 1854 in Butler, De Kalb Co., MO. Given a bond of 50 English pounds for marriage by her father William and her husband's father John. Removed to Madison Co., KY about 1800, TN 1812, KY 1813, IN 1814 to 1825, Clinton, DeKalb Co., MO about 1840. Appears that she was 16 when married. Member of Salem Church in 1842.

Martha 'Patsey' THORNTON444,1006,1007,1008 was born on 8 Oct 1792 in Chowan Co., NC. She died in 1864 in Sheridan, Yamhill Co., OR. Sold land in MO and took 5 children to OR 20 Jan 1847. Traveled with 5 wagons: including that of Owen P. Turner. Daniel Barnes, a cousin, already in OR came to the Dalles to take the women down the Colmbia River by boat. Men cut timber to make a raft to float down the river. Her husband and two sons drove the catle overland to Fort Vancouver while another son rafted down river with the wagons. She cared for her grandchildren after her daughter in law, Elizabeth, died on the trail near John Day River. Listed as 65 on 1860 census taken at South Fork Precinct, Yamhill Co., OR.

Mary 'Polly' THORNTON1009 was born about 1799 in , Burke Co., NC. She was buried in Washington Twp., DeKalb Co., MO.1008 Founding members of the Bethlehem Church in DeKalb Co, 3 mar 1842.

Frances 'Frankie' THORNTON1008 was born in 1802 in Chowan Co., NC. She died about 1832 in Clay Co., MO.1010 Lived in IN 1818-1827 or later. Removed to MO in 1840's. Richard Thornton has her death abt 1850.

He appeared in the census in 1840 in Fulton, Callaway, MO.1011 He died in 1891 in CA.1012 He was a Minister in Salem, Callaway Co., MO.1013 Came to Callaway Co., MO with his father in 1817, known for their hunting and trapping skills. Supplied inhabitants of Callaway Co, MO with gun powder at 3 bits per pound (75 cents). A hunter of bear and big game only. Killed a bear near Fulton. Sold the hide for 3 dollars at the 4 Jul celebrtion. Bought 112 acres in Callaway Co., MO Dec 1840 for $500. In Federal Censu that year in Fulton Twp.
