The last will and testament of William Thornton, of De Kalb County State of Missouri, I William Thornton, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say first I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sally Thornton the sum of four hundred dollars, further two col'ds (coloreds) to be sold and when the money becomes clear she to have the money if she stand in need of it and to each heir one hundred dollars, to Cordilia my eldest daughter one hundred dollars, William T. Thornton one hundred dollars, Jeptha Thornton one hundred dollars, Hannah Maranda Agee giving him (sic) one hundred dollars, John Thornton one hundred dollars, Thomas R. Thornton one hundred dollars, Luke Thornton one hundred dollars, Jeremiah T. Thornton one hundred dollars, Sally Ann Hines one hundred doollars of the money on hand, also 160 acres of land in Township 57 range 33 known by the name of the Toney Pace to be sold and the money to be divided equal among the aforesaid heirs to shear (sic) and shear alike, and also all the home tract I leave to my beloved wife as long as she lives or wished to live on the same, also Rob. and Martha with all the household and kitchen furniture with all the personal property therein to belonging to said farm during her natural life for her use and benefit, my farm property to be sold and the money equally divided amongst my heirs after my debt is paid. Likewise I make, council to (?) and appoint sons William T. Thornton and Jeptha Thornton to be executors of this my last will and testament hereby revolking all former wills by me made in writing whereof I now herto subscribe my name and affix my seal this first day of September one thousand and eight hundred and fifity eight.

William migrated from Kentucky in 1816, settling on Aux Vasse Prairie near Fulton in Callaway County, Missouri). Obtained US patent 1782 for 80 acres in Callaway Co. 10 Nov 1830: E1/2 of SE 1/4, section 18, T46N, R8W. Obtained US patent 2325 for 80 acres on 1 Oct 1831: E 1/2 of NE 1/4 Section 10, T46N R8W. Obtained US patent 2455 for 80 acres on 11 Feb 1832 in Callaway Co.: W 1/2 of NE 1/4 of section 10 T46N R8W. These two parcels are on opposite sides of the Auxvasse River, but not on the river itself. He bought another parcel of land in Callaway Co. on 2 Mar 1836. Obtained US patent 4915 for 76.55 acres on 14 Jan 1836 there : E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of section 3, T46N R8W. Obtained US patent 6253 for 80 acres on 7 Sep 1838 there: NE 1/4 of SW 1/4 and SE 1/4 of NW 1/4 of section 10, T46N R8W.

Moved to DeKalb Co (then part of Clinton Co., MO) in 1840, following his son Wm. Belonged to the Baptist Church in Washington Township organized by 1842, which was led by Jesse Todd and included the families of Isaac Agee, Williiam Tl Thornton, James Thornton, Joab odd, Franklin Todd, William Todd, H. P. Adams, William Adams, and Eli Adams. Church located near the Andrew County line. This group held until the Civil War during which it disintegrated from squabbles related to the conflict and was disbanded in 1866.

Obtained US patent for 77.13 acres on 1 May 1843 in De Kalb Co.: E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of section 3 T57N R33W. This is near Bayfield. Obtained US patent on another 80 acres the same day: W 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 1, T58N R33W. Obtained US patent on 40 acres on 1 May 1843 there: NE 1/4 of SE 1/4, section 3, T57N R33W east of Bayfield. Obtained US patent 4134 for another 40 acres on 1 May 1846: SW 1/4 of SE 1/4, section 22 T58N R33W 2 miles west of Clarksdale. Obtained US patent 4135 for 9.92 acres that day: S 1/2 of section 33 T58N R33W. And on the same day received US Patent 4137 for 40 acres: SW 1/4 of NW 1/4 section 34. and anotherr 31.21 acres on the Buchanan county border on 1 Jan 1849: N 1/2 of Section 4, T57N R33W, north of Bayfield. William was a community builder and with Adam Kerns invented a corn crusher. Valued at $6000 in Oct 1850 in De Kalb Co., MO. According to the 1850 census a William was living near Jeptha Thorton in DeKalb County then. Obtained US patent 7248 for 40 acres on 1 Jan 1850: SE 1/4 of NW 1/4 section 34, T58N R33W 3 miles from Clarksdale. Obtained US patent 8456 for 40 acres on 2 Oct 1854: SE 1/4 of SE 1/4, section 24, T58N R33W very close to Clarksdale and north of it. In 1855 he introduced the first steam powered saw and a grist mill in the county, which operated until 1866. Obtained US patent 22641 for 40 acres on 30 Oct 1857: SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 section 27, T58N R33W, west of Clarksdale about 3 miles. Jeremiah 25, Farmer $1770 Real Estate, $820 property, born MO. She died on 14 Sep 1891 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO. Died at the her son Jerry T. Thornton's home near Clarksdale on a Sunday. She was buried on 15 Sep 1891 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO. Tuesday, in Salem (later renamed Thornton) Cemetery near Clarksdale, DeKalb County, MO.
"She died in sure and certain hope of eternal life./ Through atonement and meditaion of a crucified Savior.' Emigrated with her father Peter to Madison Co., KY when a child. She remembered being 6 years old whtn George Washington died. Member of Predestinarian Baptist Church in KY before she married. Moved to Callaway Co., MO with her husband Wm. Moved in 1840 to DeKalb Co., MO on a farm about 3 miles SW of Clarksdale, 5 years before DeKalb Co., was organized. She had 9 children. Sally knew the medical qualities of herbs and was a good nurse as well as midwife. Her services were in much demand on the frontier. Family tradition had Sally as a fourth cousin of Mary Ann Todd, who married Abraham Lincoln. They would have to have shared the same great great great grand father and mother John Todd and Elizabeth Malory. But it appears that Mary Ann Todd's John Todd was from Scotland instead. Colonel William 'Billy' Todd THORNTON456,739,740,741,742,743 was born on 5 Apr 1817 in Aux Vasse, Callaway Co., MO. He appeared in the census in 1840 in , Clinton Co., MO.744 He was christened on 15 Jun 1842. Baptised with his wife hannah by Elder J.M.Evans of Bethlehem Church of
which he was a charter member. He died on 25 Apr 1906 in Clarksdale, DeKalb County, MO. He was buried in 1906 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO. Thornton Cemetery Came from Callaway County with Wm Adams and Isaac Agee families to Clinton Co., MO. First Thornton to settle on Jordan Creek in 1839 on Sec. 10 T57 R33, Flood destroyed home. Moved following year to Sec 34 T58 R33. Obtained US Patent 1 May 1843 for 40 acres in De Kalb Co., MO: SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of section 3, T57N R33W. On the first Assessor's list in 1845 for De Kalb Co., MO. US Patent on another 40 acres on 1 Nov 1848: NW 1/4 of SE 1/4, section 34, T58N, R33W. US patent on another 40 acres on 1 Jan 1850: NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of section 34, T58N R33W. (this duplicate property is so abstracted in the BLM records). Built home and resided there for 60 yrs. . They paid $1.25 per acre for the land. House built from the forest . Low ceiling rooms, split hardwood floors and walnut siding. They had a clock with wooden wheels that worked for 50 years. Furnishings also from the land. William was a farmer and engineer. He helped build and operate the saw and grist mills. He was Clerk of Bethlehem and Salem Church from 1851-1901. Confederate sympathizer and known as such. At one time a small group of men came to his home about dusk. During the ensuing argument a man reahed for his revolver and Wm, sitting on the porch with his oldest son started for the door. The man fired and the shot went just above the door, missing only by a few inches. Wm called his son Wm Jesse in and they left by the back door into a cornfield. The ran through the field and stayed out until it was safe to return Wm Jessie said that was one time that his father outran him. Master Mason in 1870. Called 'Colonel.' Sold his farm in 1901. Lived with his son Thomas F. after his wife died. . All of the 16 children are buried in the family cemetery.

Enumeration 501; FHL 443616; (Idaho Falls) She died on 3 Jan 1854 in , Osage Co., MO. She was buried on 3 Jan 1854 in Wright Cemetery, Osage Co., MO.751,752 Removed to Osage, MO. She was 13 when married and had her first child at 15. Had 7 children.
She married when she was only 13 years old. The first day after her marriage her husband went out to work. When he wasn't summoned to breakfast he went to see what was wrong, and found his bride sitting o n the floor playing with her dolls.


One source said that she migrated to OR in 1852 with her sister Cordelia Isaac Agee, Simeon Toney (aka Thornton) and Elizabeth Thornton, but this is probably a misidentification.

Returned to Rolla and surrendered to a Federal Provost Marshal and paroled to home. He died on 21 Nov 1874 in Clarksdale, De Kalb Co., MO. He was buried in Washington Twp., DeKalb Co., MO. Had 10 children. Blacksmith, Carpenter. Purchased 40 acres on 18 Nov 1848 in De Kalb Co., MO, cert 5980 at the Plattsburg Land office: SE quarter of SW quarter of section 22 in T58N, R33W. Homsteaded 40 acres with patent by President Polk: Sec 26 T58 R33. On 1 Oct 1859 he purchased 40 acres in De Kalb Co.: cert. 24658 at the Plattsburg Land Office: NW quarter of SE quarter of Section 27 in T58N R33W. Built log house from own timber. Furniture hand made. Bought 160 acres later. Operated saw mill and grist mill on home place of William and Sally Thornton which later became Jerry Thornton's home. Deacon in Primitive Baptist Church.

He died on 22 Aug 1872 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO. He was buried in Washington Twp., DeKalb Co., MO.759 Farmer, teacher.

Sterling Price's Army in Captain Barnes Clark Company". Travelled as far as the Pea Ridge, AR battle and then returned home. Evidently not captured or wounded. He died on 15 Feb 1912 in Clarksdale, , MO. He was buried in Feb 1912 in Washington Twp., DeKalb Co., MO.755 Listed as a farmer in his fathers household in 1850 census in DeKalb Co.,MO. Farmer. Came with parents to area when still Clinton Co. in 1840. Served as Justice of Peace; Trustee when Clarksdale was incorporated in 1887; Mayor for 8 years; President of Clarksdale School Board when it was organized; Charter member and Deacon of Primitive Baptist Churches, Bethlehem & Salem; Deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church. Moved to Clarksdale in 1866. Had a store with his son William Jesse in Clarksdale for a short time. Lived with his daughter and son in law, Sarah Cyrena and Calvin Moore in 1900.

Jeremiah 25, Farmer $1770 Real Estate, $820 property, born MO. He served in the military on 17 Sep 1861 in Blue Mills, Clay Co., MO. Served in the Missouri Militia., First of his siblings to go into the Civil War about May 1861; served in the 7th Missouri Cavalry. Wounded at Blue Mills Landing in the left arm, leaving him with a stiff arm. He was honorably discharged and sent hom. The only engagement fought in Clay Co., MO during the Civil War was the "Battle of Blue Mills Ferry" on September 17, 1861. A number of Confederate troops, about three or four thousand men, under the command of Col. J. P. Saunders were hastening to cross the Missouri River at the Blue Mills Ferry to join Gen. Sterling Price at the siege of Lexington on the south side of the Missouri. Part of these had crossed the river when they were overtaken by the Federal troops commanded by Col. John Scott, and a battle ensued in which the Federal troops were routed and driven back to Liberty on the north side of the Missouri River. The Southern troops hastened to join Price. The Federal losses were fourteen killed and eighty wounded. The Federal army made a hospital of the second and third stories ofJewell Hall and used the ground floor for a stable for their horses. They camped north of Jewell Hall and toward what is now the Colonial House dormitory. They dug a trench along the western edge of the hill overlooking Liberty. The evidence of that trench is still to be seen. In 1888 he was a Farming, stock in , DeKalb Co., MO.764 He was Primitive Baptist in 1888 in , DeKalb Co., MO.764 He died on 17 Feb 1916 in Clarksdale, DeKalb, MO. He was buried in Clarksdale, , MO. Thornton Cemetery Last of the Thorntons to settle in DeKalb Co., MO. Living with his mother Sally (Todd) Thornton on 19 Jul 1860 in Washington Twp, De Kalb Co., MO. In the MO State Militia under Gen. Price in 1861. Wounded at the battle of Blue Mills Landing and paroled home. Farmer, Implement and hardware business in Clarksdale 1898-1905 with son in law W.F.Coffey. Built a brick building on SW corner of the square. Returned to farm after retiring; It was 2 miles West and 1/4 mile South of Clarksdale. Location of sawmill and grist mill was at this farm before World War I. Joined Primitive Baptist church in 1869. Ordained a Deacon in 1906. Clerk of the Salem church for many years. Fathered 15 children,(7 boys, 8 girls) included set of triplets and twins. Daughters were the first triplets born in DeKalb Co. Called Uncle Jerry by DeKalb residents. Owned 500 acres of good land in 1888. Democrat in 1888.

Sally Ann THORNTON was born on 20 May 1837 in Callaway Co., MO. She died on 17 Jan 1918. She was buried in Washington Twp., DeKalb Co., MO. She was born in a log house on the Johnathan Arnold farm north of
Bayfield.
