2918. Cornelis* Barentsen SLECHT1698,2595 was born about 1615 in Woerden, Zeeland, Netherlands. He died on 5 Nov 1697 in Kingston, Ulster Co., NY. Was in the New Netherlands as early as 1652. A miller and magistrate in Esopus. Thisplace was first chartered as Wiltwick and then Kingston.. Cornelius was one of the first board members of the community, appointed by Peter Stuyvesant. A petition signed by many inhabitants was forwarded to the English govener "upon the 4th day of Feb. last, upon the loleful cry and lamentation of the children of Cornelis Barentsen Slegt, that their father was miserable beaten and wounded by Capt. Grodhed." and later in another petition: "That Cornelis Barentsen Slegt is beatedn in his own house by his soldier George Porter, and after this by the other soldiers, and forced to prison, and at his imprisonment used very hard... and his arms by force taken out of his house which still do remain by said Capt. Brodhead.:" He was bannished by a kangaroo court but allowed to return. Later Capt. Brodhead was later suspended and died 14 Jul 1667. Cornelis* Barentsen SLECHT and Trintje* Tysen BOSCH were married in 1652.
