244. John* COMBS1305 was born in 1735 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., VA.1306 He died about 1820 in , Floyd Co., KY.1306 This date based on a John Combs, Sr., estate being adminstered by son Elijah at that time. Purchased 78 acres on the south side of the Shenandoa River from John Harrold, Jr. formerly owned by Aaron Harrold. Witnessed by Hugh West, John Lindswy, and James Wood on 3 Jul 1758, recorded 5 ul 1758 in Frederick Co., VA..

A court martial of 10 Oct 1761 ordered that John Combs of Capt. Herny Spears Company be fined for absenting a general muster of the militia..

Appears in the on the rent rolls of 1759 and 1764. Sold land in Frederick Co., VA to Simon Carson. He was sued in Nov 1772 by Isaac Hire for a debt. But he remained in the county in the part that became Dunmore in 1772 and renamed Shenandoah in 1777. In Apr 1773 his father -in law Henry Harding made bail for his appearance for 80 pounds 4 s 8 d. Sued on Nov 1774 for debt by Alexander Machir, who was awarded 132 pounds 10 s 2.5 d plus costs and given until the following June to make payment.

Moved to Surry Co., NC between 1773 and 1780. Appears on the tax list of Capt. Martin tighing 3 white, 14 slaves and 400 acres on the N side of the Yadkin River. The 1784 Surry Co., NC tax list of Capt. Lewis includes him and two others with the same name. Sold to Mson Combs, his father on 9 Aug 1784 'the land on which I live, mill livestock, personalgy.' Witnessed by George Huston, and William Cook of Charlotte Co.

On Little Reed Island Creek of New River in Montgomery Co., VA by 1787, next to his son Mason and brother in law, Henry Harding.

By 1790 he ws in Wythe Co., VA (formed from Montgomery Co in 1789).

Charged with stealing a hog of Zachariah Ray worth 6 d. The Surry Co. Sheriff sought him through 1792. Obediah Martin Menge stated: 'John Combs Senior left Surry County with a hog that was not his property.'



There he had a dispute with the Breedings family. He may have also resided in Sullivan Co., TN.

"...on her one hundredth birthday, July 7,1945, old Betty DOBSON, of Lott's Creek, Perry County, and granddaughter of "Chunky Jerry" Combs, stood in her yard feeding her chickens, and chatted with J.D. SMITH, of Dwarf, Perry County, on the CombsES. She related that John Combs was father of the eight brothers, and how he had come to Perry and build
his ''improver's" cabin and cleared a few acres of ground, before returning to bring back his family." John* COMBS and Nancy* HARDING were married before 1755 in , Frederick Co., VA?.1306,1307 John's marriage to Nancy HARDING is documented by the Shenandoah Co, VA wills of both of her parents, the 1783 Shenandoah Court Minutes regarding settlement due John Combs from his HARDING brothers-in-law, and the 1855 Perry Co, KY death record of their son, Elijah. Also note that the Combs and Harding lands in Shenandoah were adjacent; and that no other Combs are found recorded with Henry HARDING II other than John (for whom Henry
HARDING made bail in 1779); and that both John and his son, Mason, are later found in Montgomery Co, VA adjacent to his brother-in-law, Henry HARDING III.

John 8 COMBS1308 was born on 7 Feb 1761 in prob. Frederick Co., VA.1306 He died in 1848 in , Washington Co., KY.1306 Rev. War pension applicant on 17 Nov 1825 from Perry Co., KY. Enlisted for 3 years in Shenandoah Co., VA in late 1776 or early 1777. Declared that his brother William living in KY was a Rev. War Soldier, having served in the 8th VA regiment.

Nicholas 'Danger' COMBS 81306 was born between 1761 and 1764 in prob. Frederick Co., VA.1306 He died between 1856 and 1859 in , Perry Co., KY.1306 Declared on 17 Nov 1825 in Perry Co., KY with his brother Henry that they were brothers of Rev. War pension applicant John Combs who enlisted in Shenandoah Co., VA in late 1776 or early 1777. On 17 Dec 1855 he declared that his brother John Combs was a (Rev. War) pensioner from Perry Co., (KY) and his brother William was a pensioner from KY and were both dead.
